Stories and legends about the origin of wine

Updated: Aug 8, 2023

In foreign history, wine is a very mysterious existence, so there are many legends about wine, some of which are very famous. Below, we will share two relatively famous legends.

1、 Persian Princess

With the development of navigation technology, navigators brought grapes from the Nile Delta back to Persia, and grape cultivation gradually became popular in the Persian region. The first fruits were given priority to the king, who loved to eat grapes, but couldn't eat so many at once. However, he couldn't bear to give them to others, so he had the grapes preserved in a large pottery jar. In order to prevent being eaten by others, they marked the outside of the pottery jar with the words "toxic" and hid it.

At that time, there were multiple princesses in the palace, and one of them had suicidal thoughts because she was tired of the life in the palace. By chance, she discovered the king's "poisonous" pottery jar containing grapes. She thought it was poison, so she took some and drank it. After drinking it, the princess found that this "poison" was very delicious and she didn't die, so she felt that life was very beautiful again. In order to please the king, she presented the delicious "poison" to the king for tasting. After tasting it, the king also felt that it was a delicious delicacy on earth, so she became particularly fond of this princess and the "poison". After obtaining the favor of the magistrate, the king issued a decree to collect a large number of ripe grapes and make delicious drinks using the method of "poison".

2、 Noah's Ark

The story comes from the Bible, where there is a man named Noah who is very devout in God. Later, God discovered that there were many evils and greed in the world, so he decided to send a flood on Earth to eliminate all evil creatures in the world.

As the executor, Noah selected one of all the plants on Earth, as well as a pair of animals, and boarded Noah's ark with his son. After 150 days of drifting in the flood, it finally drifted to the border area between Armenia and Iran in eastern Türkiye. After arriving at this place, Noah began to cultivate the land, planted the first grape plant, and then began to make wine.

There are 521 references to wine in the Bible, especially when Jesus said a very classic sentence during the Last Supper, 'Bread is my flesh, wine is my blood'.
